BlackGold Biofuels received the 1st place Richard Heinberg Prize in 2011, sponsored by the Foundation for a Sustainable Future. They also received 1st place in the Stiefel Family Foundation awards that year.
They converted sewer greases and other waste oils into biodiesel, a low-carbon diesel fuel. The fats, oils, and greases (FOG) pumped out of grease traps or flowing through sewer pipes to wastewater treatment plants are a financially and environmentally costly waste. They are no longer in operation.
