Two Oakland Area Entrepreneurs Are Reconnecting Us to Food

In 2009 two UC Berkeley seniors gave up lucrative corporate jobs to become full-time mushroom farmers.

What started as a mere curiosity about urban farming had grown into a passion to reconnect families to their food in new and innovative ways.

Back to the Roots was born out of this lofty mission. And soon after, Alejandro Velez and Nikhil Arora, launched their first product ― a mushroom kit that allowed anyone to grow mushrooms right out the box in just ten days.

Today, Back to the Roots is a thriving and growing business. Their ready-to-grow and ready-to-eat products are sold in thousands of locations nationwide, and the company has won several awards from leading publications and organizations for food innovation.

In partnership with PwC, we sit down with Alejandro and Nikhil to learn about their journey, and how they turned a simple idea into a new food movement.
